Peacock Bass
THOSE POWERFUL PEACOCK BASS
I like to catch lunker largemouths just as much as the next guy. But when it
comes to brute strength and bone–jarring strikes, I'm convinced that no
freshwater fishing in the world can compare to peacock bass fishing. Imagine you
are peacock bass fishing with a “Magnum Woodchopper” twitching it aimlessly
across a still-water pocket on Lake Guri or the black water of Brazil's Rio
Negro River. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a peacock bass produces a massive
wake as it approaches the bait at an alarming clip.
Anticipating when the strike will occur is as simple as counting 1, 2, 3.
Then, almost as if someone flushes a toilet beneath it, the top water lure
disappears in a massive whitewater swirl into the jaws of a huge peacock bass.
The line goes taunt, the rod folds double and the drag starts to zing as another
hump-backed monster peacock bass has its way with your bait casting gear.
Welcome to the wily world of peacock bass fishing.
The best peacock bass fishing in the world is found on Brazil's Rio Negro
River and Venezuela's Lake Guri. Lake Guri also produces fantastic payara
fishing. We can offer you first class accommodations while you are peacock bass
fishing aboard a 103 foot floating three-story hotel or a luxurious lodge on the
banks of the Rio Negro River.
The Amazonas region of Brazil harbors a jungle of 200-foot tall hardwood
trees, 100 foot tall palm trees, more than 1500 species of flowering plants and
countless tropical critters like monkeys, jaguars, slothes, anteaters, manatees,
anacondas, and alligators. Intriguing as they are, those are merely slideshows.
The main attraction for adventuresome guests in these parts is the peacock bass
fishing and payara fishing..
Called "tucunare" in Portuguese, the peacock bass is a born ambusher and one
of the most ferocious freshwater fish you'll find anywhere. Interestingly
enough, the "bass" portion of the fish's name is a bit incorrect. Peacock bass
are actually members of the cichlid family (like oscar).
Peacock bass come in several varieties, including speckled, black-barred,
butterfly and royal. The world record peacock (a 27-pounder caught by one of
Amazon Tours anglers) is speckled. These varieties range in color and size, but
the behavior is pretty much the same: mean, aggressive and territorial.
Acrobatic brawlers on a line, peacock bass snap 30-lb. monofilament like
thread, straighten saltwater hooks, mangle lures and send rods home in more
pieces than you came with. They are almost exclusively diurnal and aren't the
least bit sun-shy, hitting most lures at the surface with explosive force.
They're not too choosey about baits, but landing them is guaranteed to be one of
the toughest freshwater fights you'll ever get in. You'll love every second when
you are peacock bass fishing.
